MUMBAI — Amazon Prime Video's 'Panchayat Season 4' drew an estimated 32 million viewers in its opening weekend, making it the most-watched Indian OTT premiere in history and trending at number one in India, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and eight other countries with significant South Asian diaspora populations.
The show, which chronicles the adventures of a Phulera village secretary played by Jitendra Kumar, has become a cultural phenomenon for its authentic, warm portrayal of rural Indian life — a rarity in a streaming landscape dominated by urban narratives.
The Panchayat Effect
Series creator Chandan Kumar said Season 4 would explore the impact of government welfare schemes on a small village — a theme that resonated deeply with viewers from rural backgrounds who saw their own lives reflected on screen for the first time. "We want people in cities to understand the India that exists beyond the ring roads. And we want people in villages to see themselves as protagonists," he said.
The show has also attracted attention from international academics studying India's digital divide, with Harvard Kennedy School including it in a curriculum on grassroots democracy.
