AHMEDABAD — India crowned a dominant Champions Trophy campaign with a comprehensive 7-wicket victory over Australia in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday, as captain Rohit Sharma lifted the trophy in what he confirmed was his final One Day International match.
A Captain's Farewell
Chasing 267, India cantered home with 38 balls to spare, powered by Virat Kohli's masterful 118 not out and Shubman Gill's rapid 76. An emotional Rohit Sharma, who scored 34 in his final ODI innings, was carried on the shoulders of his teammates during the lap of honour.
"This is the perfect ending. I've given everything to this format and this team has given me everything back," Rohit said in his post-match interview, fighting back tears. "The World Cup 2023 was special, but winning this in my farewell — there are no words."
Bumrah's Tournament
Jasprit Bumrah, who was named Player of the Tournament for his 15 wickets at an economy of 3.12, produced a devastating opening spell of 3 for 18 in 7 overs that broke Australia's top order. His yorker to dismiss Steve Smith was described by commentators as "the delivery of the decade."
